Jk1001 in 2000 tj

Post by hoprocketman » Fri Jan 23, 2015 3:14 pm

Would like to share a few pics of a jk1001 install on my 2000 tj . Still have to finish trim ring for face of dash but it will be done by mid week . Install was very easy and wiring was strait forward . Purchased new plugs to plug into my tjs harness so cutting of harness was done colors matches up perfectly with wiring diagrams and no trimming to jeep to make unit fit . Had to heat up defrost vent tubing and bend a little to make room for USB plugs in back . Trimmed dash to fit unit . Will post pics of unit and the mods to install next week .

This is great! In another thread I started inquiring about doing the same. I would to see some pics without the bezel and would like to now more about the defrost mod.
I am debating on using a 97-02 bezel or an 03-06 bezel.

I will be ordering the JK1001 soon for my 2005 LJ.

Well here you go !
Image
first i removed the two locating pins on back of unit
Image
this is the one on the upper right side of unit just cut it off flush with tab with mouning hole .
Then do the same to the lower left side .
Then you have to remove the mounting holes on the lower right and upper left side of unit looking at face the front of unit.Image
Image
this will let unit clear bosses in tj radio opening . Next you will need to make a lower left side hole relocateion plate . I made a hole relocation plate from 16ga alum.
Image
used a machine screw 1/4"long with nyloc nut on outside . This should be all the mods needed on unit . Next i went to a auto parts store and purchased a wiring adaptor . I went to O Reillys auto and got a P/NCK-WHCR harness adapter $12.99 and used the diagram on the top of unit and spliced them in . You I used heat srink butt splices they work well
Image
this what you will have when done .
Image
You will have to cut the red wire and splice in red wire from the new plugs .next i added a longer ground wire to harness and put a 3/8"ring end on it so to get to a good ground .i removed a nut just to the left of the defrost vent exits and placed ground there.Next i used the foam from the packaging to help support the unit i felt with removing the two mounts it would need it .just pealed the cut out portion of it off an cut to size of unit Image

Next i had to make a little room !!! The back left of the unit is where the USB and GPS plugs are located at and it will push up aganst the defrost vents .soo i did a little clearing out . I used a heat gun and heated it up a little in that location and use a scewdriver handle to just give it a little room . Dont get it too hot ! You can see i almost got it too hot still worked thought
.Image

next plug in harness
Image
and put foam block under unit and slide in
Image

next i bolted unit in
And carefully cut dash cover to fit

That looks great! Could you please get a better finished picture? It is somewhat dark. Thanks.

**UPDATE**

Check it out guys, Metra just released a Double Din dash kit for 1997-2002 TJ Jeep Wranglers. This means you can install Insane Audio's DD2001 with this dash kit, rather than modifying your dash to install a JK2001 in your 1997-2002 TJ. See the links below for more info.
