Battery dying

Hello, writing in about an issue I've been having since installing a JL3001 in my 2018 JLU. I installed the over the summer of 2020. I have a basic Sport with the small screen...so it was a big step up! Things were great over the summer, and we use the Jeep often. Some time over that first winter I went to start the Jeep and it was stone dead. I tried a jump pack, then ended up buying a cabinet charger that came back multiple times that the batteries were sulfated. I ended up spending close to $500 on two new batteries (that was super fun replacing) and replaced them myself.

All seemed good, and I did keep it on a trickle charger for the rest of the winter. Things were great again for the summer, and we drove it often. In early November it sat for a few weeks. Again, it was stone dead. The charger came back and said the new battery was sulfated. But, I was able to cycle it a couple times and brought it back to life. It's now on a trickle charger again. Seems weird that a 10 month old battery would be that dead within a few weeks.

For what it's worth, my improvements have been minimal...just wheels/tires and a running boards. No added lights or electronics. We don't leave chargers or anything in there that would draw.

Anyone else having an issue?

Hello CG,

None of our Head Units draw power when not in use. Even the OBD 2 adapter is designed in a way that it draws power only when in use.

Have you taken off the doors on your Jeep? If yes, that could be a reason why the power on your battery is being drained when not in use. There is a setting you will need to change in order for your Head Unit to turn off when not in use.

If you have taken the doors off your Jeep, you need to make a setting change within the Control Settings app. Just go to the Control Settings app > Head Unit Power Off Mode. There, you will have 2 options, ACC and ACC Plus Door. If your doors are off, then you should be selecting ACC. You can set the unit to power off anytime the vehicle is turned off or to power off only when vehicle is turned off and doors are open.

I have absolutely have issues with the JL3001. We don't use our jeep daily and have had jeep batteries go as low as 4.7 and 5.1 after only sitting for a week. Jeep is in the off position and no accessories are left on. Also we have a dual battery from genesis with 750 CCA AGM dual batteries. The stereo is running them both down and the only reason I can think of is that the stereo is not allowing the amps to power down.
I have an MB Quart dual amp/speaker package upgrade.
After testing the battery sitting for a week we had massive drains on both batteries.
I have recently swapped back to stock 5" display/stereo and after sitting for 2 weeks unused the batteries are 12.26v after initially being charged to 12.6v.

Me again! I've kept the battery tender on the main battery all winter. Wife disconnected the charger and went to start it. Three times in a row, there was a single click from the starter, it sounded like it would throw out the starter gear but not have enough juice to start. On the 4th try, it started right up as if nothing was wrong. She drove it around town and on the highway for about an hour and stopped at her studio to teach a class. She came out an hour later and it did the same thing, but never got more than a click.

I borrowed a jump pack from my mechanic and connected it and it read 12.6 volts coming out of the battery (with the pack off). Turned the pack on and it made zero difference. The mechanic came out and did the same thing. He did a little research and found a recall/bulletin for a PCM module issue that had a no-start symptom.

Had it towed to the dealer and they told me that both batteries had bad cells and know that I replaced them. So, they want me to see about getting replacements. He did mention that the small battery is actually what starts the engine (it's literally the size of a tractor battery...seems crazy that it's what starts the Jeep!!!! I asked him if putting a tender on the main battery will charge the smaller battery and he said no. Once I get it back I'm planning on putting a pigtail on it so I can put a trickle charger on that one as well.

Now to the point of my post: the dealer wants to flash the PCM, but he said they had another Jeep in there with the same JL3001 radio in it and that when they flashed the PCM it flashed the radio, too. He suggested doing some research, because he wasn't sure if it would be as "simple" as a download/reload of software or if I'd have to send the radio out. The prior customer wasn't impressed that they had brick'd his stereo and didn't want to do it again.

Thoughts?

Hey guys. I have been having the same issue since I installed this radio. I don't use my truck every day and after around a week, the batteries are completely drained. I don't have any accessories on this truck at all. I am convinced the radio is draining the batteries. I've had it at the dealership 3 times in the past 6 months and frankly I am ready to rip this thing off the dashboard. Dealership has replaced the batteries several times already and done extensive testing and assure me there is nothing wrong, yet the batteries keep draining.

I have a question for support: how can I completely shut down this radio? Not just standby, complete shut down.

When I go away from home I disconnect the main battery but not the aux because it is not easily accessible. And my aux battery has been dead for nearly a month now. I have to waste another trip to the dealership to have it replaced. This is really inconvenient.

The JL3001 doesn’t drain the battery in anyway. You just need a small setting change when you have taken the doors off your Jeep.
All you need to do is go to the Control Settings app > Head Unit Power Off Mode > ACC. (The setting under settings is smart auto sleep).
